“Doug Ford here,” the Progressive Conservative leader texted me recently. “I will stand up and fight US tariffs to save Ontario jobs.” He informed me that I have two options: “REPLY > YES if you’re with me and the PC team.” Or, I could reply “stop to stop.”

This column is my reply: stop.

Doug Ford is on track for a crushing third majority government. Voters — enthusiastic to endorse the incumbent in the face of a looming trade war, fond of Ford’s moderately antagonist relationship with the federal government, charmed by his folksy awh-shucks sensibility — are replying a lower-case “yes.” Nobody seems to think Doug Ford is good, but most seem to believe that he’s good enough for this moment.

I may be a Toronto émigré, but please hear me out: Vote for anybody else.
