Ontario Health Coalition

In the context of Ontario’s public health care system under unprecedented stress, following years of austerity budgets and a global pandemic, powerful organizations have ramped up efforts to push for privatization.

Right-wing think tank push for privatized two-tier health care in Canada, among other policies. They have aggressively pushed for the privatization of health care services and a two-tier system to address record-long wait times. These organizations, along with some conservative politicians, argue that increasing private, for-profit involvement in delivering care—modeled after systems in Europe—can improve efficiency, increase patient choice, and reduce the strain on the publicly funded system.

Evidence rarely suggests that private, for-profit corporations improve care quality or lower costs; instead, numerous examples indicate the opposite.

Canada's healthcare system should prioritize public-sector reforms that improve quality, access, and efficiency over efforts to dismantle the existing framework.
