In Ontario, the Ford government has expanded the privatization of our public hospital services to for-profit clinics using our public funding. They are allowing the private clinics to get away with illegal, unlawful (and unethical) extra-billing and manipulatively charging patients user fees. Last week, they announced a major expansion of privatization on the heels of a new media report and formal complaint from the Ontario Health Coalition showing patients being charged hundreds to thousands of dollars in private clinics in contravention of the Canada Health Act and Ontario's laws that are supposed to protect patients from such exploitation.

In Alberta too, the government has used public funding to expand private for-profit surgical clinics. A growing number of clinics nationwide are selling surgeries, MRIs, CTs and other diagnostic tests —services once considered primarily the purview of the public health care sector—to those who can pay out of pocket.

Join Canadian Health Coalition’s Anne Lagacé Dowson for an online conversation about halting the privatization of health care with Ontario Health Coalition’s Natalie Mehra, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternative's Andrew Longhurst and Canadian Doctors for Medicare’s Dr. Melanie Bechard.
